Enables rapid macro integration of GbE L2 switch and PHY technology into a range of SoCs
 
Introducing the first 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2 Switch IP incorporating an 8-port state-of-the-art, highly-integrated, and fully-featured Physical Layer transceiver that supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T Ethernet protocols.

By offering all of these functions as a GigaCell™ IP, system-on-chip (SoC) designers can rapidly create optimal single-chip switching solutions tailored to their systems. It is possible for designers to create larger switches such as 16-, 24-, 32-port, etc., by combining two or more 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) IP GigaCell modules; multi-protocol bridges such as GbE-to-802.11n wireless or GbE-to-PCI-Express®; and, add unique security features to enhance and differentiate designs.

The IP combines all the functionality of a high-speed switch, including packet buffer, Media Access Controllers (MAC), address management, and provides non-blocking switch fabric. It complies with the IEEE 802 specification, providing compatibility with all industry standard Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) devices. The IP supports standard 802.3x and 802.3z flow-control modes at all speeds and auto-negotiation. Learning then forwarding is used by the IP to manage packet switching between the eight independent Ethernet ports.
